Another day in our own little EURO 2012 qualification. Only two matches today:
Group D: France vs. Romania 5:2
Group F: Israel vs. Croatia 3:1
I won’t bother to update the tables in the wiki until Tuesday, when the next games are due. Many teams will play for the last time this year on Tuesday. There are only two more matches in November and after that, we’ll have to wait until March 2011.
Another qualification day for the EURO2012 in Free Software with proposed results.
sick man (cc-by 2.0)
FSFE president Karsten Gerloff recently wrote a blog post about the situation in the UK. He writes “Britain is the sick man of Europe in terms of Free Software adoption.” The results below agree with this. I think there are more – too many – sick men in Europe who suffer from the same disease. That’s why Wales is able to get a draw against Bulgaria.
Let’s have a look at the changes in our wiki on the pages for FS usage in public administration and education since the last match. Thanks to Maëlle and Nicolas Jean for their help!
Denmark
“Parliament imposes on the government the duty to ensure that the public sector’s use of IT, including use of software, is based on open standards”
Estonia
France
Ireland
- Very cautious approach to FS, rather advocating OSS standards over the use of Free Software themselves. However, a very precise describtion of what OSS is an what it is suited to the Public sector.
Romania
Spain
Ukraine
- 2010-09-02: Ukraine is working on own GNU/Linux distribution (German) (Russian)
So, these countries improved their chances to win in the next few days. There will be more machtes on Oct 9th and 12th.

While preparing the posting for next week for the Euro 2012, I found out that I missed one match on Sep 2nd: Group C: Israel vs. Malta.
I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t listed on the UEFA page, because I remember checking it three times for the date, that my own list was lacking. I thought that it might have not been scheduled yet, but apparently, it took place already. Anyhow, I decided to let Israel win even higher than in soccer: 3:0
The list on the wiki is already updated.
By the way: Does anybody know a good tournament software? I couldn’t find any on the web. It has to be free software, of course.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t follow as many news as I wanted to in the last two months. Here is what I found worth sharing:
pupils working independently with freedroidz (cc-by-nc-sa)
Country specific news:
Germany
Luxembourg
United Kingdom
- I found out about DFEY (Digital Freedom in Education and Youth). According to their website, it’s a “group of young people from across Britain who believe in the need to protect their freedoms in this digital age, and wish to educate others about how to protect their own freedoms”. Sounds nice to me. I’ve put them on my list of groups to contact.
Only seven entries in two months. I must have missed something! If you know what it was, please let me know per email, comment or feed the wiki!

Another day of the qualification of the UEFA EURO 2012 in regards to Free Software usage and Open Standards came to its end. Most interesting to me was the match Norway vs. Portugal. On the wiki page for public administration, Portugal looks much weaker than Norway, but we have a lot of good news from the educational field. It still wasn’t enough for a draw to me. I’d be happy if I got more opinions on that.
Here are the results of the third day (preliminary until Sep 9, 2010):

Today, the second day of the qualification of the UEFA EURO 2012 in regards to Free Software usage and Open Standards took place. Here are the preliminary results. They stay preliminary until September 7th.
I found these matches particulary intersting:
Belgium vs. Germany
I think, both are strong countries. Both have a ministry using Free Software, both have some municipalities using Free Software, but I gave Belgium preference, because I have the feeling that they understood the idea better.
and
Estonia vs. Italy
This could also be a draw, but I gave Italy one point more, because we have so many entries about their use of Free Software in education. I don’t want to put much weight in individuals, but it can’t hurt to remind of the remarks of one Estonian politician with quite some influence as the Vice President of the European Commission less than a year ago.
all other matches were more or less clear, considering the data at hand. I hope we can collect more data in the next months to make the second round more interesting.
All results and the current tables are available in the Fellowship wiki.
