Preparations for !FOSDEM (part 2)

My plans for FOSDEM are getting more specific. As I wrote earlier, I am mainly looking forward to meet people, the talks are somewhat secondary. Nevertheless, I will try to attend a few. As I still haven’t found a way to be at serveral places at a given time, I had to kick out a lot of interesting talks as a tribute to the laws of physics. So, below, also for my convenience, is my selection for this year with my comments (in parenthesis) why I want to attend the talk:

Compliance Panel (Interesting in general. Tip: As I know from last year, you’ve got to be early to get a seat. Space is very limited in this room.)
Track: Legal issues devroom
Room: K.3.201
Day: Saturday
Start: 11:05 End: 11:55

What is a derivative work under European Copyright Law?
(I still don’t know where the law draws that line. I hope I will get enlighted here)
Track: Legal issues devroom
Room: K.3.201
Day: Saturday
Start: 12:00 End: 12:45

Coding Goûter – Sharing our passion for code with our kids. A new kind of family time.
(I already wrote about it)
Track: Lightning talks
Room: Ferrer
Day: Saturday
Start: 13:00 End: 13:15

Learning to Automate (I’d like to free more time for activists work. Automating repetitive tasks should help here)
Track: Configuration Systems Management devroom
Room: K.4.601
Day: Saturday
Start: 14:00  End: 14:45

Should We Embrace App Stores? (I find the problematic interesting and I like the concept that it is mainly planned as an open discussion)
Track: Legal issues devroom
Room: K.3.201
Day: Saturday
Start: 15:00 End: 15:45

eGov Testing Machine to ensure Free Software users freedom to access eGovernment services  (Well, this is a “machine” that could be very helpful for the FSFE)
Track: Lightning talks
Room: Ferrer
Day: Sunday
Start: 12:20  End: 12:35

Kolab Groupware (I heard so much about it and never got to ever try it. At least I can hear a little more about it in these 10 minutes 🙂 )
Track: Lightning talks
Room: Ferrer
Day: Sunday
Start: 12:40  End: 12:55

Free, open, secure and convenient communications (I never got Ekiga to work and decided to stop wasting my time. So, I was happy that Sam and all the others donated their time to do it for me during the last Software Freedom Day. And I am especially thankful that they documented their findings so well, because that is something I and thouthands of others did not. So, by documenting everything, they saved me a lot of time. I am curious what to expect in the future. Well, I think just the list of speakers is already worth to attend this talk)
Track: Open source challenges
Room: Janson
Day: Sunday
Start: 14:00 End: 14:50

Update (2013-01-31): Just saw that this collides with the keysigning party… Too bad.

Android freedom and Replicant. (Even though I failed to get my HTC Magic rooted at the FYA workshop at FSCONS, I am still interested in the matter)
Track: Embedded and mobile devroom
Room: Lameere
Day: Sunday
Start: 15:00 End: 16:00

Introducing GNOME Photos (When I got my first digital camera, I thought – and various articles on the internet agreed with me – that a proper file name and a good folder structure is the best recipe for keeping the pictures manageble. Well, as of today, I have more than 230GB (81892+ files) of pictures and have to admit that I was wrong back then. To my defence: I realized that years ago, but haven’t found a solution that satisfied all my needs. Spending a lot of time for FSFE activist work, I also kind of neglected this subject and may pay for it by not finding precious pictures even though I still have them somewhere! Maybe this talk will promise salvation?)
Track: Cross desktop devroom
Room: H.1308
Day: Sunday
Start: 16:40 End: 17:00

The Keeper of Secrets (The subtitle of this talk is: “The Dance of Community Leadership”. As the deputy coordinator of FSFE’s edu-team, I am of course interested in this subject, even though we don’t code, I guess that the mechanics work quite the same.)
Track: Keynotes
Room: Janson
Day: Sunday
Start: 17:00 End: 17:50

Now, you know where you (might) find me if I am not at the FSFE booth at FOSDEM 😉 As I wrote above, this list is my personal selection, not a suggestion for you! I can’t recommend any of these talks, because I haven’t seen them yet 🙂 Apropos:The only reason why Otto’s  talk “Fixing public procurement: How we’ll stop European governments” is not in the list above, is that I already seen it at FSCONS in November 2012. The same and similar is true for other talks I didn’t mention and collide with one of the above mentioned. What I am trying to say here is: go and check out the program yourself! 🙂

Started to prepare for !FOSDEM 2013 !fsfe

As I already wrote in the edu-team summary for 2012, I will be going to FOSDEM. It seems that the program is not entirely ready yet, but there are not enough education related talks for my taste. Well, on the other hand, the whole event is about educating hackers, right? 🙂

The only plain edu thing I could find so far – and I am really looking forward to it – is:“Coding Goûter – Sharing our passion for code with our kids. A new kind of family time.” There is more info about it in English. I really like the concept of Coding Goûter. It could even combined with freedroidz as this posting shows, but doesn’t have to.

If you want to talk to me regarding Free Software in Education or the work of the edu-team, stop by the FSFE booth at FOSDEM (K building, 1st floor). I’ll be there frequently and somebody there will have my number.

I am looking forward to see you all (again) at FOSDEM! 🙂
