Euro 2012 qualification day #5 and the sick man of Europe

Another qualification day for the EURO2012 in Free Software with proposed results.

sick man (cc-by 2.0)

sick man (cc-by 2.0)

FSFE president Karsten Gerloff recently wrote a blog post about the situation in the UK. He writes “Britain is the sick man of Europe in terms of Free Software adoption.” The results below agree with this. I think there are more – too many – sick men in Europe who suffer from the same disease. That’s why Wales is able to get a draw against Bulgaria.

Let’s have a look at the changes in our wiki on the pages for FS usage in public administration and education since the last match. Thanks to Maëlle and Nicolas Jean for their help!

Denmark

“Parliament imposes on the government the duty to ensure that the public sector’s use of IT, including use of software, is based on open standards”

Estonia

France

Ireland

  • Very cautious approach to FS, rather advocating OSS standards over the use of Free Software themselves. However, a very precise describtion of what OSS is an what it is suited to the Public sector.

Romania

Spain

Ukraine

  • 2010-09-02: Ukraine is working on own GNU/Linux distribution (German) (Russian)

So, these countries improved their chances to win in the next few days. There will be more machtes on Oct 9th and 12th.
