I love !Free Software 2013: Roland Olbricht and the #Overpass API for !OSM #ilovefs !fsfe !gnu

For the fourth time now, the FSFE is celebrating the Valentines Day for Free Software. So it is slowly becoming a tradition 🙂400px-Overpass\_API\_logo.svg.png

This year, my Valentine’s “Thank You” goes to Roland Olbricht, creator and developer of the Overpass API for OpenStreetMap.org.

Just recently, I heard a podcast (German) about it with Roland and enjoyed how he explained the AGPL in comparison to other licenses and how concerned he is to provide good documentation. And apart from that and a few other things, the Overpass API seems to be a really impressive piece of Free Software!

Free Software in Education NEWS – January 2013

Hello everybody! It’s been a while since I wrote my last post with edu news. So, I am planning to post news more regularly again. I start trying on a monthly basis. Here’s what I collected in January:

Community

Government

Dokumentation

There is an educational manual on the Raspberry Pi created by a team of UK teachers from Computing at School (CAS). The PDF manual is a beginner’s guide to Scratch, Python, the command line and more.

Software

  • OpenMOOC “A fully Free Software MOOC solution”

Past Events:

Upcomming events

  • Feb 18: Edu-Team member Sebastian Seitz will be interviewed (in German) at 14:00 hrs. Title: “Open everything? What do we really need to learn?” The interview will be recorded.
  • Germany: Didacta, largest German edu fair (February 19-23, 2013). I guess that Free Software will be rare, but I consider to go there to have a look on my own.

If you have any infos on news or events that might be of interest to Free Software activists, please let me know!
