Hello everybody! It’s been a while since I wrote my last post with edu news. So, I am planning to post news more regularly again. I start trying on a monthly basis. Here’s what I collected in January:
Community
- Michael Shiloh from Arduino asks teachers on a mailinglist why they want to use Arduino in education. He is working on a curriculum for high school students.
- Open letter by Pullco to the Conseil Général in Corrèze, France against iPads in education
- the Debian based edu distribution Skolelinux now has a planet
- I found out that distrowatch has an education filter
- OSS Watch UK published a list of Free Software options for education
- The yearly report of FSFE’s edu-team came out! 🙂
- Petter Reinholdtsen from Skolelinux asks the community to please help to make golearn more useful
- OER: Crowdfunding for creation of creative commons licensed school book was successful. Now, the project is being monitored by a scientific research group from Austria (TU Graz)
- Free Software groups warn Greece will waste millions on school software
Government
- Switzerland: The city of Bern is to foster Free Software in administration and education. Teachers shall get training
Dokumentation
There is an educational manual on the Raspberry Pi created by a team of UK teachers from Computing at School (CAS). The PDF manual is a beginner’s guide to Scratch, Python, the command line and more.
Software
- OpenMOOC “A fully Free Software MOOC solution”
Past Events:
- Italy: The conference “Verso una Scuola Open” about Free Software in education took place in Trento
Upcomming events
- Feb 18: Edu-Team member Sebastian Seitz will be interviewed (in German) at 14:00 hrs. Title: “Open everything? What do we really need to learn?” The interview will be recorded.
- Germany: Didacta, largest German edu fair (February 19-23, 2013). I guess that Free Software will be rare, but I consider to go there to have a look on my own.
If you have any infos on news or events that might be of interest to Free Software activists, please let me know!
