Few hours to the Fellowship Meeting

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Here we are in Bolzano.  I’m excited: there are many Fellows here.  We have also new Fellows to welcome.  There will be soon pictures and recordings of the SFSCon, too.

The presentation of the Fellowship was appreciated: the advocacy project has attracted the interest of the audience. Tomorrow it will be a very interesting day: we will get ready to shape the future of our community.

First draft of Advocacy Project is online

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

The first draft of the Advocacy Project has been published . Comment the draft, shape the project as you wish. It will be further discussed at the upcoming First International Fellowship Meeting.

See you in Bolzano ๐Ÿ™‚

Banner for the Meeting

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

We are getting close to our important appointment.  I was playing with GIMP and I have modified one of the banners in Fun: spread it around if you can so that more people can join the Meeting.

Agenda for the Meeting finalised

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

There was a positive reaction on the Fellow’s discussion list about the eZ workshop, so probably it is time to close the agenda and start getting ready to travel to Bolzano for the first international meeting of Fellows.  We will take the whole day to get together, learn eZ Publish, listen to Werner teach uses of the Fellowship cryptocard,  hear the big surprise announcement, play with advocacy. And don’t forget that there will be the night too, with dinner and good beer and chats.

It’s exciting!  I can’t wait to meet you there.  Spread the word: the more, the merrier.

How about a workshop on eZ Publish?

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

During the past days I have been more busy than usual with the Fellows volunteering to maintain and enhance the Fellowship portal.  I realized that eZ is probably not so difficult to play with, once you get the basics.

Thinking about the upcoming meeting I thought: why not try inviting a eZ expert to Bolzano to give us a brief introduction to eZ Publish?  I have asked some people around and after a first round of email exchange I can say that a brief workshop on eZ is doable.

I think it would be great to have more people involved in shaping the portal.  Would you be interested in a couple of hours hacking php code with eZ while in Bolzano?  Shall we add a topic to the agenda and start finalising it?

Catching up with the blog

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I have been offline for the past days, after the crisis with the server that powers this site.  Basically, what happened is related to the Fellowship’s success: the traffic on the site grew faster than we planned, which makes everybody happy except our server that is under stress.

Working on eZ to repair and optimize the site made me think that it would be nice to have a eZ workshop at the coming Fellowship Meeting in Bolzano.   What do you think?  We can invite eZ publish experts to hack on fsfe.org site, if somebody is interested.

Reaching Bolzano from anywhere

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Many Fellows are getting ready to participate to the Fellowship Meeting in Bolzano, nov. 11th but I noticed that many still don’t know how to reach Bolzano. Here are a few tips.

The closest airports are in Verona (Italy) and  Innsbruck (Austria, just across the border).  Following closest are Bergamo and Milano, where many cheap flights operate.

Bolzano has also a train station connected to all major Italian cities.  You can check the train’s schedules on many websites, like trenitalia (and others all around Europe).

More detailed info are also available on South Tyrol website

Reserve your place soon, the conference will be fun and interesting.

Car pooling to Bolzano

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

On the new list discussions (where Fellows are organizing the next Fellowship Meeting with FSFE Team), Fellow Bjoern compared prices to travel from Stuttgart to the Fellowship Meeting.  It seems that taking the car can be cheapers, so he is offering some place with his car.  I think it’s a good idea and hope that other people can do the same and share car rides to reach Bolzano.  Bjoern also found cheaper hotels.  Good job.

BTW, I would appreciate a ride from Milano ๐Ÿ™‚

The powers of the Fellows

Monday, September 11th, 2006

By talking with members of the Free Software community, I realised that one of the least considered reasons to join is the fact that Fellows can promote their projects, plans and ideas to further Free Software through the Fellowship.  That means having an international audience of 800 (and growing) dedicated and smart people. It also means working directly with FSFE to further Free Software, in your home town as well as in Bruxelles.

There are already example of Fellows proposing projects and using the Fellowship for Free Software.  Stephan, for example, suggested to have an international meeting of Fellows.  Emmanuele proudly used his affiliation in some articles regarding the abuse of electronic scrutiny in past Italian elections.  Shane suggested to use the power of the Fellowship to improve Free Software advocacy

Imagine what you can do with the power of the Fellows. Imagine starting an information campaign about Free Software in your home town or your old school, all with the help and support of FSFE via the Fellowship.  Does it sound good?  Stupid?  Say it, I’m all ears.

The Fellows connection

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Organizing a meeting like the Fellowship Meeting is not a piece of cake.  Luckily FSFE and its Fellows can count on a  wide international network of friends.  In this case our friends in Bolzano offered to co-locate the Fellowship Meeting with the South Tyrol Software Freedom Conference.

Thanks to the friendship with SFSCon, the Fellows not only have the facility to meet in person but also enjoy a great deal of backend support for the logistics, like dealing with registration of attendees.  SFSCon has provided also special deal packages for accommodation.  It’s good to be part of a big community ๐Ÿ™‚

Keep an eye here (constantly updated) and on the SFSCon web site to register soon.
