Von smart zu sinnlos – die globalen Auswirkungen von 10 Jahren Smartphone
Ich bin mal wieder auf einen interessanten Text zur Nachhaltigkeit von Smartphones gestoßen, From smart to senseless, in dem die globalen Folgen der Produktion, Nutzung und Entsorgung der in den letzen 10 Jahren produzierten ca. 7 Milliarden Smartphones dargestellt.
Es ergibt sich das zu erwartende Bild: ca. 70 % des Energieverbrauchs entsteht bei der Fertigung, 20 % bei der Nutzung, 2% bei der Entsorgung und 6% bei der Distribution. Daß die Distribution einen so hohen Anteil hat, hätte ich nicht gedacht. Daß nur 2% bei der Entsorgung entstehen, hat vermutlich damit zu tun, daß die Rückgewinnung von Rohstoffen nur in Ansätzen erfolgt.
Die traurigste Tatsache ist allerdings, daß in den USA die durchschnittliche Nutzungsdauer nur zwei Jahre beträgt.
Wo ein Grund für die Misere liegt, ergibt sich aus dem folgenden Zitat:
And sadly, the problems with smartphones do not end when a consumer is ready to repair or upgrade their phone. Major smartphone manufacturers are increasingly making product design decisions that take away an individual’s ability to replace the battery or add more memory. As a result, all the resources, energy, and human effort expended to make each phone are wasted, if the phone is damaged, needs a new battery, or the user outgrows the storage capacity. This greatly reduces the lifespan of the product and drives demand for new products and maximum profit.
Diese Design-Entscheidungen finden sich leider auch bei Tablets und Laptops.
Der Ausweg aus der Misere wird auch benannt:
We are calling for a new business model, in which smartphone manufacturers take into account the impacts their popular devices are having on our planet, and the desire of consumers to slow down the rate of phones they go through in a decade. Manufacturers should measure their innovation not by fewer millimeters and more megapixels, but by designing devices to last, by making them easily repairable and upgradeable, and using components and materials that can safely be reused again and again to make
new phones.
Mit meinem Fairphone habe ich wohl einen Hersteller gefunden, der versucht dieses Modell umzusetzten.
