GNU GPL FAQ

The entry you cite says it quite clearly:
...the public already has the right to use the program under the GPL, and this right cannot be withdrawn.

Groklaw article on the issue

"One can't retroactively revoke licenses previously granted, unless the license terms allow you to do so.
The most you can do is stop granting new licenses."

Watching youtube videos is possible...

Although flash is not my preferred format for videos, it is possible to view with free software (Debian GNU/Linux 4.0):
- Install unplug for Iceweasel
- save the video.flv file
- view the file with vlc
There exist other possibilities like clive http://home.gna.org/clive/

Examples

Businesses and developers have chosen the copyleft route. We can see this in Sun's OpenOffice.org and Java launches, in the Mozilla suite licence change of 2003, and in which free software operating system has the most corporate investment and developer participation: GNU+Linux. Even the Linux kernel - not a project lead by software freedom devotees - they laughed when someone recently offered to pay them to dual license under a permissive licence.

Linspire seem to have misunderstood the effect of GPLv3 on their business. They've said "Customers are leaving Linspire for Novell". With GPLv3, people will no longer feel pressured to move to Novell, so they might stay with Linspire. ...or they might leave Linspire anyway after reading Linspire's FUD letter.

I'm a happy Debian punter

Well, normally I should not really worry to much, I'm a happy Debian user anyways. I used to have Ubuntu installed on desktop and laptop just to have a look at it. There's still a couple of open bug reports left over from that time. It's just that this is bad for the community. For the last two years or so, we at Edlug have always been recommending Ubuntu, and it's been the default distro to use for Install Days and such. If things work, it's really awesome, well integrated, wifi working out of the box etc.
Also, the user community is great and documentation is of better quality compared to other distros. For me as a long-time Debian fanboy it's easy to help Ubuntu users if their computers have problems.
I guess it's not only Ubuntu that are having problems with buggy upstream software, but given their popularity, they really should do more to combat the bugs.

Why ubuntu?

@florianhaas: I think Ubuntu was chosen because it's more user friendly.

Ututo already provides a free software distro for techs, and Ubuntu provides a not-fully-free distro for non-techs. Debian is somewhere in the middle - less free than Ututo, less user friendly than Ubuntu.

gNewSense will be as free as Ututo, and as user friendly as Ubuntu ...except than some of your hardware might not work :-)

gnewsense

While I understand the goals of gnewsense, i don't understand why they chose to base the distro on ubuntu.
Wouldn't it have been easier to directly use Debian?
